The Hawke's Bay Express guides you through the coach restricted city centre, devastated by the 1931 earthquake and completely rebuilt in Art Deco style. Then it takes you over Napier's beautiful Bluff Hill, where the early settlers lived and the old port village of Ahuriri and the inland lagoon. You have a chance to enjoy a short stop to view the interior of the National Tobacco Co. - a very ornate building. The in-depth commentary covers the regions history, 1931 earthquake, the cities rebuild, economy, industries and lifestyle with personal stories of life from the 5th generation Hawke's Bay owners.
Hawke's Bay Express is happy to assist people on and off the train.
The train has just 1 step at 250 mm .They are able to put down steps to make two steps of just 150 mm & 100 mm to accommodate where necessary.
The train is not able to take wheelchairs, but they are used to assisting various aged groups and cruise ship passengers.
