The Journey

The Coastal Pacific train operates between Picton - the gateway to the beautiful Marlborough Sounds, Kaikoura - the home of whale watching and onto Christchurch, the largest city in the South Island!

The journey takes you through the wine growing region of Blenheim, the rugged Kaikoura mountain ranges and along the Pacific Ocean coastline with views of marine wildlife such as seals and penguins to some of New Zealand's finest horticultural and farmland areas of the Canterbury Plains, all from the comfort of your carriage.

So, sit back and enjoy a genuine kiwi rail experience through the South Island's north eastern rugged coastline!

Accessibility Information

If you have any accessibility requirements, please select the type of accessibility assistance required at the time of booking. Support animals are welcomed on board the train. There is a drop off/pick up zone which is well signed. Parking is available just outside the station.

Picton Station

Picton Train Station is conveniently located on Auckland Street a 10 minute walk to the Picton Ferry Terminal or the Town Centre.

Christchurch Station

Christchurch Train Station is serviced by city buses that stop approximately 300 metres from the station. Shuttle buses provide a pick-up service from hotels to the station to meet the train.

There is a mobility car park at the station and ramped access to the station check-in terminal.

Accessible toilets are available within the terminal, however, wheelchair/power-chair users may require some assistance with the doors into the toilets. Staff are willing to assist passengers with access requirements as needed.

The station is currently revising its information signage that once complete will enhance the customer experience. There are no obstructions to the path of travel from the car park to the train terminal. There are two fixed ramps leading to the train station terminal and to the station platform, these ramps both have handrails.

  • The station terminal main front entrance has double automatic doors.
  • There are accessible toilet facilities located to the right of the main entrance to the station terminal. 
  • There is a grassed area for service dogs.

The Train 

An accessibility hoist is available on all scenic train services and provides access from the platform to the Café carriage. Each Café carriage has an allocation of two spaces for either wheel or power chair customers or storage of power chair or mobility scooters. The Café carriage also provides a range of food and beverages that can be purchased as well as an accessibility toilet. All carriages are fitted with hearing loops to boost the PA sound levels.

  • Maximum length = 112 cm
  • Maximum width = 65cm​

​The Train carriages 

Carriages are carpeted, centrally heated and air-conditioned, and provide exceptional views from non-reflective panoramic side and roof windows .

Users of wheelchairs or powerchairs have a dedicated seating area in the Café carriage, with full access to the café and accessible bathroom. Customers with reduced mobility are advised to inform KiwiRail at booking so they can be allocated a seat within the Café Carriage. The main carriages are carpeted, each seat has a handgrip on the centre walkway to provide support whilst the train is moving. The width of passageway between the seats in the main carriages is approximately 600 mm.

There are signs informing passengers with hearing aids to use the "R" switch on their aid for better reception of speaker announcements. A hearing loop is present in the carriages. Headphones are available on the train for announcements and information.

The accessible toilet facility is adjacent to the Café Carriage and has an exceptionally wide sliding doorway entrance. Buttons have braille to assist people with vision impairment. An emergency call button is located within reach of the toilet. The toilet seat lid can be used as a back rest, the washbasin is reachable from the toilet seat.
